Private or Restructured Hospital (Part 2)

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

When you are getting a hospital and surgical coverage, often known as Private Medical Insurance, (PMI), besides knowing your preference in restructured or private hospitals, it is also important to consider factors like annual premium, pre-existing conditions, annual claimable limits, pre & post hospital treatment limits, waiting period, etc.

With this, you should be able to make a better decision when getting a medical insurance choosing between restructured or private hospitals.

Hospitals in the private category are commonly believed to provide superior quality healthcare and services due to the amount of money patients are charged by the facilities and doctors on a fee-for-service basis. This is debatable but more often than not, this is true. Singaporeans usually pay more using cash in private hospitals because they are not able to utilise their CPF Medisave funds for their medical bills.

As for foreigners, it makes no difference in cost between restructured or private hospitals because they directly compete with each other.

Most private hospitals are centrally located, offers premium medical services through in-house specialist clinics and are equipped with executive or VIP suites. A shorter waiting time is the main reason why expatriates living in Singapore or medical tourists from abroad prefer to visit a private healthcare facility.

In addition, private hospitals maintain Joint Commission International (JCI) standards which provides meaningful metrics to improve the quality and patient safety in all clinical and managerial functions as well as embrace continuous performance improvements that are aligned with global standards.
